About Sickle Cell Mission

Sickle cell disease is a genetic blood disease which affects the whole life of affected patient. It is more common in the tribal population of India, but occurs in non tribals too. It not only causes anemia but also pain crises, reduced growth, and affects many organs like lungs, heart, kidney, eyes, bones and the brain.

  • The incidence of Sickle Cell and Thalassemia are high in Odisha. The incidence of Sickle Cell varies from 6–10% whereas thalassemia incidence is 2–6%.
  • National Sickle Cell Anaemia Elimination Mission (NSCAEM) was started in Odisha from 1st July 2023 and under this Programme, 21 Sickle Cell Prone districts are covered.
